Recommended Essential Oils
The Institute of Spiritual Healing & Aromatherapy recommends that you use essential oils that have been tested and verified to be of therapeutic quality. There are international standards for therapeutic essential oils: ISO (International Standards Organization) and AFNOR (Association French Normalization Organization Regulation) standards are generally the two referred to most often. The AFNOR standards state the percentages of certain chemical constituents that must be present for an essential oil to be considered therapeutic quality. In order to gain the AFNOR stamp of approval, the oils must be sent to France for testing. A third standard is the EC (European Community) which is considered to be the "gold standard" now for essential oils. There is yet another North American standard that has been set higher than AFNOR, ISO or EC and that is YLTG. This standard was set by Dr. Herve Casabianca, a plant molecular analytical chemist from France. He has personally calibrated the GC/MS machines for Young Living in Utah, Idaho, Ecuador and France. ISHA recommends that when purchasing essential oils you inquire as to whether every batch of oils have been properly tested by gas chromatography and mass spectometry and have met the standards as set by the French.

Essential Oil Companies
The Institute of Spiritual Healing & Aromatherapy holds that there are many companies that provide therapeutic quality essential oils and do proper testing of their products. However, there are many that do not. We do not recommend that you purchase your essential oils in health food stores where the quality is most likely a perfume quality. The following companies have been checked out by ISHA and found to have acceptable oils. With this said, there is one company that stands out above all the rest and that is Young Living Essential Oils. I can personally attest to the quality of their oils having visited three of their distilleries and reviewed their quality assurance. Linda Smith, President, ISHA

ISHA Approved Methods of Application
ISHA's approved methods of application of essential oils includes diffusion, direct inhalation, neat (undiluted which is the French method as opposed to the British method of always diluting oils before applying) and diluted skin application, diluted in creams, salves and gels, diluted in baths or foot, hand and sitz baths, diluted in water for mouthwashes and gargles. ISHA does not recommend internal use of essential oils except by those who are licensed to diagnose and prescribe for someone else. NAHA (The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy) only approves diluting oils before applying.
